HexBase is a high-performance UNIX database specially designed for Web use. If your site needs the fastest available answer time for dynamic contents under heavy traffic, or if you wish to build an online production system, HexBase will be the right database server for you. Already in use on 5 out of 10 largest web sites in Germany.

In order to optimize the data access, HexBase defines a few additional HTML expressions and control structures. When a dynamic page is required, HexBase initiates an online database search. Depending on the definition of the query the result of the search operation is formatted and translated into pure dynamic HTML.

Creating new records follows the same simple principle - WITHOUT CGI scripts or other workarounds.

Open Standards, Server-side JAVA and CORBA:

HexBase 2.0 has a Java interface with the ability to connect to CORBA services on local or remote machines. This extension makes HexBase even more attractive for corporate intranets and for bringing data of proprietary software to the Web: HexMac can encapsulate legacy systems into delegating CORBA objects and access the software from the dynamic scripting language of HexBase.

"HBS" - The HexBase Script Language :

HexBase is extending HTML with additional stuctures:
  • Expressions:
    Input values (from INPUT-fields), database records, interrelated by the standard elementary logical and arithmetic functions and operations
  • Control structures:
    (IF,SWITCH) only to generate the document if it satisfies certain defined conditions
  • Formatting functions
    Since all HexBase commands are logical extensions to HTM language, the formatting of the output is very flexible. No escaping of the scripts is needed
  • Specification of database search operations
    (Table, search criterion, sorting). For efficiency reasons, these scripts are translated into P-code.
  • JAVA methods within the script language
    Server-side JAVA is supported in the version 2.0 and onwards. this makes it possible to mix JAVA methods to the scripts, performing formatting, calculations, drawing and other functions.

    HTTP-Daemon Integration :

    The transparent integration of database queries under heavy load requires intimate integration of the database engine into the HTTP-daemon. HexBase is relying on the Apache HTTP-daemon, which is the most used Web server on the Net today. However, HexBase is also available for Netscape Servers.

    A tight integration with the Web server is needed to reduce the enormous overhead of database queries (caching, precompilied scripts, etc.). Therefore, HexBase is one of the fastest database engines on the Net today. HexBase is available today on the most popular UNIX platforms, SUN Solaris, SGI IRIX and Linux.
